Yes, it is certified as suitable for saline and coastal environments. If you live near the sea or coast, we recommend cleaning the surface periodically to keep it in top condition.

The values refer to the eye bolt screwed fully into sound, load-bearing timber. Degraded wood or partial grip will reduce holding strength: if in doubt, have the structure assessed by a professional.

It comes down to three things, in order of importance.

  1. The first is the load on the fixing point, which varies depending on the size of the shade sail, the fabric, and wind exposure.
    As a general rule:
    the 10×100 (working load 150 kg) is suitable for shade sails up to around 3.6 m per side, made from breathable shade fabric and installed in a sheltered position;
    the 12×120 (working load 220 kg) is the right choice from around 4 m per side upwards, in exposed or windy locations, and whenever the shade sail is tensioned with significant force.
    Fabric is the most underrated factor: a waterproof material does not allow wind to pass through, which means the load on the fixing point increases considerably. For this reason, with a waterproof shade sail it is worth going for the 12×120 even on medium-sized installations.

  2. The second consideration is the beam. The 12×120 has an 80 mm thread and requires solid structural timber at least 100 mm deep in the direction of screwing. If the beam is narrow — a joist of 60–80 mm — a 10×100 screwed in fully will hold better than a 12×120 that only partially engages: the stated load rating only applies when the full thread is embedded in the timber.

  3. The third is what needs to pass through the ring. If you are attaching a carabiner and a tensioner together, the 25 mm ring of the 12×120 gives you more comfortable clearance than the 22 mm ring.

Yes: use a drill bit slightly smaller than the thread core, to a depth roughly equal to the length of the thread. If you are unsure about the correct bit size, our customer service team will point you in the right direction.

Drill a pilot hole into the beam, then screw the eye bolt in until the entire thread is embedded in the wood, with the ring oriented in the direction of the load.

Into load-bearing wood in good condition: beams, joists, and poles. Never into thin panels or deteriorated wood.

No: the wood thread is not designed for use with wall plugs. For brick and concrete walls, there are the wall plates and anchors available in the range, such as Landa.

Until the entire thread is working within the wood and the ring remains oriented towards the shade sail: this is how the load is transferred into the structure.

After pre-drilling, it screws in by hand; for the final turns, you can use a bar threaded through the ring to act as a lever, without marking the surface.
